What Are Drywall Finishing Levels? A Homeowner's Guide

It does matter, quite a bit. The finishing level determines how smooth and refined the final surface is, and the right level depends on how the wall or ceiling will be used and what type of paint or covering goes on top.
The Five Levels of Drywall Finishing
Level 0
No finishing at all. Drywall is hung and fastened, but no tape, compound, or sanding has been applied. This is only used in temporary construction or areas that will never be seen, like the inside of a wall cavity before insulation.
Level 1
Tape is embedded in the joint compound at the seams and angles, but it’s not smoothed out or finished. Level 1 is used in spaces like attics, service corridors, or fire-rated assemblies, anywhere that’s going to be hidden or irrelevant to appearance.
Level 2

Level 3
Two coats of compound are applied over the tape, with fastener heads covered twice. Level 3 is the right spec for walls and ceilings that will receive a medium or heavy texture — like knockdown or orange peel. Level 4
This is the most common finishing level for residential interiors. Three coats of compound are applied, all fastener heads and corner beads are fully finished, and the surface is sanded smooth. Level 4 is appropriate for walls that will receive flat, eggshell, or light texture paints. If you have standard painted walls in your home, they’re almost certainly finished to Level 4.
Level 5
The highest standard of drywall finishing. After all the coats and sanding of Level 4, a thin skim coat of joint compound is applied over the entire surface, then sanded to an extremely smooth, uniform finish. Level 5 is required for high-gloss or semi-gloss paints, for walls where critical lighting will be used, and for any application where surface perfection is non-negotiable.

What About Texture?
Texture and finishing level work together. 5. Visible Mold Growth
Black, green, or white fuzzy growth on drywall surfaces is mold , and it means water has been present long enough for spores to take hold and spread. Mold can appear as small spots or cover large areas depending on how long the moisture issue has been active.
Drywall is particularly susceptible to mold because the paper facing is organic material that mold digests. Once mold has penetrated the facing, it’s in the gypsum core too, even if you can only see it on the surface.
What to do: Don’t attempt to clean mold off drywall with bleach and call it done. Affected drywall needs to come out. Depending on the extent of the growth, professional mold remediation may be required before the area can be rebuilt.
