Drywall for Garages: What Fort Worth Homeowners Should Know

Why Garages Have Different Drywall Requirements
The main reason is fire safety. Building codes require that the wall and ceiling between an attached garage and living space provide a fire-rated barrier that slows the spread of flames and gives occupants time to evacuate.
In Texas, the International Residential Code (IRC) requires at least 1/2-inch drywall on all surfaces of an attached garage that face the interior of the house, with Type X (5/8-inch fire-rated) drywall required on ceilings and on walls adjacent to habitable rooms directly above the garage.
Type X vs. Standard Drywall
Standard residential drywall is 1/2-inch thick. Type X drywall is 5/8-inch and contains glass fibers in the gypsum core that significantly slow fire penetration. While standard drywall provides roughly 30 minutes of fire resistance, Type X is rated for approximately 45–60 minutes.
For attached garages, the rule of thumb is:
- Wall separating garage from living area: 1/2-inch minimum, Type X preferred
- Ceiling above garage with living space above: 5/8-inch Type X required
- Detached garages: no fire-rating requirement, standard drywall is fine
Moisture and the Garage Environment
